Autism Centers Near Me: From Isolation to Inclusion

11 Jan 2022
Discover 'autism centers near me' for specialized services and resources, paving the path from isolation to inclusion.

Autism Centers Overview

As we navigate the journey to understanding autism, it's crucial to identify the various resources available. Autism centers play a pivotal role in helping individuals on the autism spectrum and their families navigate the challenges they face. These centers provide a variety of services, including diagnostic evaluation clinics and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy services.

Diagnostic Evaluation Clinics

Diagnostic evaluation clinics, such as the Montreal Autism and Psychological Evaluation Clinic (CÉPAM), specialize in the diagnostic evaluation of Autism Spectrum Disorders in children and adults. They use specific evaluation tools like ADI-R and ADOS-2 to provide reliable outcomes.

These clinics often go beyond just initial diagnostic evaluations. They can provide evaluations to assess progress and update goals for children and teenagers who already have a diagnosis of autism. They can also conduct cognitive evaluations (IQ testing) as a standalone evaluation or as part of a more complex evaluation [1].

ABA Therapy Services

ABA therapy services are another crucial part of autism centers. On Target ABA, for example, offers ABA therapy services designed to help children with autism improve language and communication skills, play and social skills, and daily living skills. These services are provided through natural settings, teachable moments, 1-on-1 and group sessions, and real-life practice [2].

Early intervention is a significant aspect of ABA therapy. On Target ABA emphasizes that the earlier a child is seen, the quicker and greater their success can be.

Furthermore, On Target ABA provides personalized, compassionate ABA therapy services tailored to each family they serve. They stress a family-focused approach to therapy, ensuring that each family's unique needs and circumstances are taken into account.

The ABA therapy centers provided by On Target ABA have several advantages. They have no waitlist, offer flexible scheduling, family-focused services, and low BCBA to client ratios for optimal progress monitoring. They have a track record of delivering exceptional results for children with autism.

When searching for "autism centers near me," consider these factors to ensure you find a center that can provide the diagnostic and therapeutic services necessary for your unique situation.

State Support and Resources

Autism centers and resources vary widely across the United States, with some states offering a larger array of supportive services. Here, we delve into an overview of supportive states and explore specific autism centers in Virginia.

Supportive States Overview

Nearly all states in the USA have enacted laws mandating insurance coverage for autism treatments. However, the range and availability of treatment vary significantly from state to state.

California has been ranked as the most supportive state, considering factors such as grants, state laws, and ADDM inclusion. On the other hand, Alaska has the largest average distance (100.66km) between an individual with autism and any of the seven resource categories. In contrast, New Hampshire has the shortest distance (9.3km).

According to research, the top five most supportive states, excluding autism resources, are California, Massachusetts, Indiana, Colorado, and Vermont [3].

Autism Centers in Virginia

Virginia offers several autism centers that provide a range of services, including social skills instruction and therapy. Here are a few key centers:

These resources can offer critical help for families navigating the challenges of autism, providing therapy, support, and skills instruction to improve quality of life and foster inclusion.

Specialized Autism Services

In the quest for 'autism centers near me', two notable institutions stand out for their specialized services: Adult Neurodevelopmental Services (ANS) and Cleveland Clinic Autism Center.

Adult Neurodevelopmental Services

Adult Neurodevelopmental Services (ANS) is a reputable institution that offers short-term, inter-professional goal-oriented assessment and treatment to adults diagnosed with Intellectual Disabilities or Autism. ANS also conducts Autism diagnostic assessments [4].

This institution is located on the 3rd floor of the McCain Complex Care & Recovery Building at 1025 Queen Street West. It operates an outpatient program and a research department focused on advancing understanding and treatment for adults with intellectual disabilities and autism [4].

The ANS team comprises a diverse group of professionals including psychiatrists, psychologists, behavior therapists, occupational therapists, social workers, registered nurses, and developmental service workers.

Cleveland Clinic Autism Center

The Cleveland Clinic Children's Center for Autism, located at the Hospital for Rehabilitation Campus in the Debra Ann November Wing, offers state-of-the-art facilities for diagnostic, treatment, and intensive educational programming specific to autism spectrum disorders (ASD) [5].

The Center for Autism at Cleveland Clinic Children's delivers a range of programs and services for patients and family members dealing with ASD [5]. Among its offerings is the Cleveland Clinic Children's Lerner School for Autism, a chartered, non-public day school certified by the state of Ohio, serving students from the age of earliest diagnosis through age 21.

In addition, the Autism Development Solutions at Cleveland Clinic Children’s involves providing essential services for independent healthcare and educational organizations, including consultations, program development, and execution of a full business plan for autism treatment programs.

Patient stories related to autism at Cleveland Clinic Children's include stories of brothers making strides together, a boy overcoming challenges of being diagnosed with autism during a pandemic, and sisters developing a special bond through an autism school.

These specialized autism services not only provide necessary support, but also foster a sense of hope and progress for individuals and families navigating the challenges of ASD.

Speech and Language Therapy

Speech and language therapy plays a crucial role in the development of children with autism. These therapies aim to improve their communication skills, which can significantly enhance their quality of life. Two renowned autism centers offering such services are the Monarch Center and the Sheila C. Johnson Center.

Monarch Center Programs

At the Monarch Center for Autism, the Speech and Language Therapy Department is led by a Licensed Clinical Speech Language Pathologist Director and consists of 22 Speech Language Pathologists (SLP). Each SLP holds the American Speech Hearing Association Certificate of Clinical Competence or is completing their Clinical Fellowship Year with intensive on-site supervision.

The speech therapy models at Monarch are customized based on the unique needs of each student. These include 1:1 individual therapy, small group therapy, social skills training groups, consultative support in classrooms, and therapeutic support during various activities. SLPs also work with older students in the community at job sites to practice generalizing communication skills in a natural environment.

Monarch SLPs use various technologies like augmentative communication devices, web-based visual learning software, SmartBoards, and video modeling to teach difficult language concepts in captivating ways. They also provide dedicated Assistive Technology Specialists for non- and/or limited-speaking students who may benefit from Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices.

Assessments in the area of speech and language are conducted upon intake to determine strengths and weaknesses of students. Treatment plans are then developed and individualized to meet each student's needs, with routine evaluations throughout the school year to reconfirm approaches and re-establish IEP goals for students.

Monarch SLPs use visual supports pervasively to teach instruction, organization, and expression, striving to provide all students with a "voice" regardless of their level of communication impairment. They teach seven facets of functional communication, including language that supports a student's need for behavioral organization and control, as well as communication during everyday activities.

Sheila C. Johnson Center Services

The Sheila C. Johnson Center for Clinical Services offers diagnostic assessments for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) for toddlers, children, and adolescents. These assessments provide relevant diagnoses and recommendations for intervention and educational/vocational planning.

In addition, they conduct evaluations for treatment planning for children and adolescents who have already been diagnosed with ASD. Clinicians complete cognitive, educational, behavioral, and/or emotional assessments to make recommendations for intervention and educational/vocational planning.

The Sheila C. Johnson Center also offers social skills groups for children, teens, and young adults with ASD using curriculums like PEERS and Children’s Friendship Training. In these groups, caregivers participate as social coaches.

For caregivers of children with ASD up to age 10, the RUBI Parent Training program is available. Here, caregivers learn strategies for increasing positive behavior and reducing challenging behavior through one-on-one sessions with a clinician.

Lastly, the Sheila C. Johnson Center provides consultation on school supports for children with developmental disorders, including autism, intellectual disability, and language delays, to caregivers and school personnel. These consultations can occur in the clinic or via telehealth.

These programs and services offered by the Monarch Center and the Sheila C. Johnson Center exemplify the supportive and comprehensive approach taken by autism centers to assist individuals with autism in improving their speech and language skills.
